Project Quilting 10.4 - Pixel Play

I was a little intimidated by this week's challenge for Project Quilting - I can honestly say that I've never made a quilt like this before and didn't want to get in over my head and pick a project that I wouldn't have time to finish.  I did some googling early in the week and didn't see anything that looked do-able and sparked my imagination.  Finally on Thursday I found a really cool Eiffel tower that was pixilated.  The only problem was that it required about 15 or 20 different shades of fabric, and I wasn't up to mentally dealing with that complex of a project in the time I had!  Then I tried looking for a simple Eiffel Tower pixel project and found a really neat You-tube tutorial on how to draw your own!  Bingo!

First of all I got my tower drawn out, then started figuring out how I would like to construct it.  I knew that I did not want to make the whole quilt out of individual squares!  I broke it down into sections, and decided to be really brave and make it out of 1/2 inch squares so I could hang it on my Mini wall.

All in all it took me a couple of hours to piece this quilt, and about an hour to quilt and bind it.  Not too bad!  And it really was fun - kind of like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.  I was delighted with my end result:
Isn't it cute?

I quilted it in a 1/2 inch grid with 28/2 wt Aurifil thread in a light grey.  I was a little worried that my quilt was getting skewed about half way through, but it came out perfectly.  I used a scrap of 100% Tuscany Wool from Hobbs for the batting.  I love how flat and lightweight it is, perfect for a little wall hanging.

I'm experimenting with using glue dots to hang my mini quilts.  That wall is a super hard paneling that I have a tough time getting nails into, so if this works I'll be able to easily hang my mini quilts and move them around as I add more.  So far most of them have stayed up just fine!
My pixel Eiffel Tower measures 15 inches high and 10 1/2 inches wide.  It was made by me (Pamela Boatright) in Coos Bay, Oregon!  Oh - I forgot to say that I used scraps of the Island Batik solids in grey, white and black.  These were the leftovers from my CrossFlight quilt that I made for the Black and White Blog Hop - that's why I always hang onto my scraps - you never know when you might need a little of this and that for a project!  And this quilt would also qualify for the Magnificent Mini challenge for Island Batik Ambassadors - so I guess it's another two-fer!

Anyway, shout out to Island Batik for the super terrific solids!  They are so awesome for minis because they don't fray, and they press so nice and flat.  Many thanks for providing me with wonderful fabric to play with - I very much appreciate and enjoy each piece!

And thanks to Kim for the great challenges - I'm having a blast with each one this year, and am enjoying trying some new things!  Now I'm going to go link up and check out the entries!

I love this! I haven’t been playing along but was intrigued by this challenge. QuiltCon and two hops had me over the top last week, so as I used to do at the LQS, I am vicariously pixelating quilting with the gang. Great job, Pamela.
