Row 2 of the Hometown Nostalgia Row Quilt

Welcome, it's time to start Row two of our quilt!  This row is one of my favorites (I feel like I always say that, but I guess I have a lot of favorites!)  It's Churn Dash - also known as Double Monkey Wrench.  This is a very easy block, so it'll be a pleasant sew for all of us.

This is how the block appears in my original quilt.  For this Row along, I'll be making it in pinks, using a constant background and pinks from my scrap bin.  If you are doing the row with all the same fabrics you will need 1/4 yard background, and 1/8 yard each of light, medium and dark fabrics.

For each block you will need four half square triangles each of background and medium, four rectangles of background and dark, and one square of light.

You will start by sewing all of your half square triangles - trim the dog-ears from the corners and make sure they measure 2 1/2 inches square; then sew your rectangles together.

Lay out your block as shown and sew together!  My favorite method is webbing - chain sewing everything together so your block rows are held together by the threads, then sewing the rows together:

Sew the first two units in each row together.

Add the third unit so your rows are complete.

Sew the top two rows together, pressing seams toward the rectangle units.

Then sew the final row to the top two to complete the block!

To simplify sewing the blocks together, press the row seams toward the outside of the block.  If you do this you can rotate every other block and your seams will nest, making it easier to assemble your row.  If you are working with directional fabric you could also press half your blocks this way, and half your blocks toward the center row.  Either way, thinking ahead will make it easier to complete the row!

I hope you are enjoying the slow pace of this quilt along as much as I am!  I hope to get the rest of my blocks cut out today, then enjoy making a block here and there throughout the rest of the month.  If you are behind on the first row, you still have plenty of time to catch up!
