Project Quilting 16.3 - Birthstone Coaster

I have a busy week this week, so thought I would challenge myself to make something small for this week's Project Quilting challenge!  I loved the prompt to use our birthstone to create something, and right away thought that a gemstone coaster would be a nice project.  It took just a few minutes to find a pattern by Jen Kingwell for a foundation paper pieced block in a variety of sizes. It was exactly what I was looing for!

My birthstone is Peridot.  It didn't take long to pull out some green strips from my Island Batik stash and make this cute little quilt!  I love that mini quilts can be quilted so quickly, I finished this up in about an hour altogether, including printing the pattern!

Another piece of green for the back.  I just pressed the edges of the opening under, and they were sewn in with the edge stitching.

At just a bit over 4 inches square, this is a handy little coaster.  I really love the way the black highlights the greens!  It's a rainy day here on the Oregon Coast!

It's already been put to use for my morning mug!  A finished project is the perfect way to start my week!  Happy Monday!
