I am very careful in washing my quilts that get used a lot - cold water and gentle cycle and drying. For those that are wall quilts, I don't hang them where they will get direct sun and will tumble them in the dryer to remove dust. I make my quilts to be used!
Wash in cold water on gentle cycle, line dry if possible (can't do that in the winter), try to fix any problems I see early, before they can get worse. Store away from sunlight.
If a quilt is hanging on a rack for a long time for show and not getting used, refold it every once in awhile in a different way so the folds don't get too permanent.
I use it and if it wears out then I get to make a new one. Special quilts with applique and the like get hung on the wall or racks to display.
