Seashore Splendor Block 6

Thanks so much for your patience - I appreciate all the kind comments and encouragement I've received!  My retreat was wonderful, and now I'm back in the sewing room and ready to wrap my mind around this block.  It's not particularly difficult, but I know that not everyone enjoys foundation paper piecing, so I decided to add some instructions for traditional piecing.  The effect is the same, and you don't have to use foundations - so even if you don't want to paper piece you can easily make this block!

I call this one Flying Home.  It was inspired by the Canada Geese that pass overhead in the spring and fall.  It finishes at 6 inches tall and 12 inches wide, and is part of the sky section of the quilt.

To cut pieces for foundation paper piecing I started out with 6 inch squares, and cut them in half both ways diagonally.  Then I cut 3 inch strips for the sky sections.

I cut a 45 degree cut from the end and stitched the background to the black triangle. 

In order to cut a piece to size, I recommend placing your pattern on top of your strip, and adding a generous seam allowance, and if in doubt, a bit extra.  Then, slide the pattern out and cut the angle.

After you get all your sections sewn, lay them out, A to E and sew them together.  I like to remove the foundation paper first for these since it makes it easier to tear out the paper. 

I think it's a nice block!  I didn't do the traditional version yet, but it will look almost the same, just a few extra seam lines.
