It depends if it is a modern quilt or not?
A nine or four-patch is good - it teaches you how to match seams, to sew a straight line, and it is easy, which translates to a good finish.

Modern - strip quilts are good!

I like modern, asymmetrical, unusual patterns - the fabric is gorgeous and needs a pattern to showcase the fabric.

I also think a pattern using pre-cuts such as charm squares would be a great starter quilt. They can be laid out in numerous interesting ways.

A log cabin or rail fence quilt would be good for beginners. I say this from experience. The log cabin was the first quilt I learned to make.

A four-square or nine-patch block that alternates with HST or plain blocks looks pleasing and is fairly easy for a newbie to follow. IF they are 9-inch or 12-inch blocks, it wouldn't be too difficult to have a small quilt and feel successful.

Nine Patch would be a good beginner quilt. barbkaup(at)(yahoo)(dot)(com)
