For once when starting a new challenge for Project Quilting I had an inspiration right off the bat - I've been watching Dr. Who lately, and have enjoyed seeing his defending his fashion sense in season 6!
So, a bow tie block was definitely my pick for this week's challenge, but I really wanted to stretch the idea a bit and come up with something original. As usual, EQ7 came to the rescue and I found an inspiration in the quilt layout section.
I started by adding the colors I wanted to use - I was debating between blue and burgundy, and all of a sudden I got a wonderful surprise!
The Tardis showed up!
Well, when you get a visit from the Doctor and the Tardis, what can you do? I printed up the templates and got busy doing some English Paper Piecing to make my vision come to life! It didn't take too long to get the top sewn, then I was ready to add the quilting.
I decided to add some 1/4 inch echoing to emphasize the bow tie - it's pretty subtle, but I liked it better than using a different fabric in that position.
I quilted some panels in the Tardis, swirls in the sky, echoing in the grey background and big swirls in the border. I then finished it off with black binding.
This little quilt finished at 19 x 21.5 inches. I created it here in my Coos Bay, OR home - kept my mind busy while I was sick with a cold this week!
Linking up here for the challenge! Can't wait to see what other quilter's came up with, this was a different theme for sure!
Very clever!!
